You Make Joburg Great

Johannesburg- What makes Joburg great? In August 2009 PenQuin International advertising agency began searching for exactly why Joburg is such a great place to stay. It didn’t take long to discover that the answer was incredibly powerful: The people.

You.

The “You make Joburg Great” campaign aimed to identify and raise awareness of an asset that Joburg’s residents could be proud of: The people.

The campaign’s message was simple - Joburg has the best people in the world – they’re vibrant, cool, open, trendy, beautiful, brilliant, creative, cosmopolitan and friendly. Just like you. All that was left to do was tell everyone that.

So, PenQuin designed a logo, stencilled it onto a few hundred pieces of cardboard and t-shirts, and went to work by telling people that they make Joburg Great. The message made its way to Joburg street corners, concerts, sports events, bridges and Joburg landmarks, all the while being captured on social media as the residents became intensely engaged and actively involved in spreading the word.

Why though, did PenQuin do all of this?

PenQuin International is a newly appointed advertising agency for the City of Joburg. Their first brief was to develop a campaign that evoked pride within the residents of this 2010 World Cup host city, and contribute to the brand perceptions of Joburg locally, nationally and internationally.

The innovation displayed by the City of Joburg and PenQuin, while developing and executing the campaign, has developed positive results and a message that has long-term goals and potential, much like New York’s “I love NY”.

This campaign has already spread as far as England, USA and Canada, and has even been a powerful catalyst for bringing some of the city’s people back home.

“You make Joburg Great” is a message for everyone working, living and visiting, that they make Joburg such a great place. It is a message for the police, the municipal workers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, bankers and sportsmen.

Joburg has the greatest people in the world. PenQuin, the residents and the City of Joburg will prove it to the world.

TOP TALENT FOR THE TAKING AT THE 2010 STAR WORKPLACE EXPO

Johannesburg – The Star Workplace Expo 2010, taking place from 19 to 21 March 2010 in the Coca-Cola Dome, is selling floor space fast as corporations, tertiary and government institutions are securing their place to have a pick of top talent in Gauteng. Exhibitors such as Teach SA, Fasset, Department of Labour, IDT, Milpark Business, Mbeva, TUT and Boston have all participated in the 2009 Expo and found it invaluable as a platform to engage with the more than 14,500 careerists, learners, students, graduates and professionals who attended.

The Workplace Expo, an initiative by PenQuin International, has received much acclaim in employment sector, stimulating interest from many multi-nationals and organisations looking to participate in 2010. Among them are Learning Point, Global Education, SAPICS and Open Learning who already signed-up. With South Africa officially emerging out of the global recession, these forward-thinking organisations are foreseeing the implications the strengthening economy will have on the employment sector; revenue generation, job creation and increased skills demand across all major industries. South Africa will also no doubt experience a mass influx of investment and industry growth on the back of the FIFA World Cup™. To that end The Star Workplace Expo is strategically scheduled in March 2010 to facilitate last minute skills recruitment ahead of World Cup projects in July.

Exhibitions have consistently proven to be one of the most effective means of marketing and brand awareness due to their direct, interactive nature and targeted lead generation. The vast talent pool of potential employees and professionals entering the job market, changing careers or exploring career development, are looking at proactive organisations that, by creating opportunities for engagement, sets themselves apart from others. The Star Workplace Expo gives organisations that platform. “We are focused on making The Star Workplace work for our exhibitors, ensuring tomorrow’s talent is theirs for the taking. We have increased our niche marketing spend to widen our channels of communication. Exhibitors can expect a conservative estimation of 20,000 visitors and will enjoy pre-expo publicity and tailor made packages to suit their needs and budget,” adds Michael Berger, PenQuin International Special Projects.

SIXTH AMAZING RACE BY PENQUIN INTERNATIONAL RAISES OVER R100,000 FOR CHARITY

Johannesburg – The sixth biannual Amazing (drinking, laughing, frustrating) Race for Charity kicked off on 10 October in a flash of colour and cacophony. 150 teams gathered at Q.Ba in Bryanston to participate in this nerve-frazzling contest. PenQuin raised over R100, 000 in cash and merchandise in aid of the SOS Children’s Village. PenQuin created the Amazing Race as a fun and entertaining mechanism to raise money. Using in-house marketing expertise, the company catapulted the race to one of the most anticipated events in Johannesburg.

“PenQuin recognises the importance of such initiatives not only to the benefiting organisation, but to staff morale as well. You don’t need the budget of a multinational corporation to give something back, but rather look at new and innovative ways to mobilise people to want to contribute to a good cause,” adds Darren Leishman, PenQuin MD.

Teams enthusiastically dressed up, decorated their vehicles and brought a “no-holds barred” determination to eliminate their opposition. Clues had teams solve the Fibonacci sequence, climb walls and swim the full length of a 25 metre pool, among others.

PenQuin International would like to express gratitude to Rand Merchant Bank and LiveOutLoud for their generous contribution. The next race is scheduled for the last weekend in March 2010.

PENQUIN INTERNATIONAL RECEIVES PRAISE FOR THE CAPE ARGUS WORKPLACE EXPO

Gregg ForbesWednesday, 30 September 2009 – The Mother City showed great enthusiasm for The Cape Argus Workplace Expo, with an impressive turnout of over 4700 visitors. PenQuin International received great feedback from the exhibitors for bringing this opportunity to their doorstep.

In his opening address to visitors at the Expo, Minister Alan Winde, MEC of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism stated: “I would like to express my sincere thanks to PenQuin International, in conjunction with Independents Newspapers, for bringing the Cape Argus Workplace Expo to Cape Town. It is encouraging to see the eager and aspiring youth of our country taking positive steps toward finding employment. The workplace expo is a wonderful creation, and I would be pleased to see it become a bigger, better and more regular event.”

The expo set out to provide face to face interaction between organisations from the private, public, tertiary and recruitment sector and every one entering or seasoned in the employment market. In her keynote address, Alderman Belinda Walker, from the Mayoral Office of City of Cape Town, give visitors the following advice: “Use these two days wisely to gain important information about available career opportunities and what you need to do to qualify for them. And if you do not have the skills for the job you have set your heart on – then make a plan. Find a job that will set you on the road to acquiring those skills.”

The Cape Argus Workplace Expo allowed companies to highlight critical growth areas and promote professional advancement opportunities. A representative from Telkom explained: “the Expo cemented Telkom’s status among students and graduates as an employer of choice. We were able to showcase our career opportunities and capture information on the potential new hires such as skills, qualifications and experience, which will be integrated into the in-house skills database”. City of Cape Town resonated Telkom’s sentiments with: “A well organised event where we could show- case our career opportunities and market our graduate internship programme.”

Exhibitors and visitors commended PenQuin for the professional coordination of all components that ensured that the Expo ran smoothly; from stand design and layout to the support given by the organising team. “We are very proud of what the Expo achieved in Cape Town” adds Michael Berger, PenQuin Special Projects. “The turnout is comparable to that in Johannesburg given the smaller scale, but provided immeasurable return to all involved.”

The next Workplace Expo takes place in JHB at The Coca Cola Dome 19 – 21 March 2010. Bookings for this event open 05 October 2009. For more info on exhibitor rates and bookings contact Natalie Cumberlege on 011 879 1900.
